Introduction to Drawing Course

Classes Available In Los Angeles Area:

Introduction to Drawing Course:

I offer an 8-week drawing course that is information-packed and a valuable learning experience. The program is designed to provide you with a fundamental introduction to traditional drawing techniques. We will be meeting in-person with small class sizes to ensure that you receive adequate attention. The primary subject matter includes still-life, landscapes, and cityscapes. However, all of the subjects we cover will incorporate learning skills and techniques that may be applied to drawing just about anything you can see or imagine.

SIMPLIFIED COURSE DESCRIPTION:

  • How to use core artist drawing tools
  • How to draw from real-life, existing imagery, and memory
  • How to view objects and interpret information with an artist's eye
  • How to simplify complex imagery on paper
  • How to use fundamental shade & shadow techniques
  • Introductions to composition, perspective, scale, and proportion
  • Productive self-critiquing methods (as well as optional group critiques)
  • How to develop your own artistic process and style
  • How to create urban or landscape scenes
  • NOTE: As this course is a general introduction to drawing, we do not focus heavily on the complexity of figure drawing. However, many of the elements you learn throughout the course will help you build a foundation for learning how to draw the human form.
  • You may also choose to attend optional 'Friday Sessions' where we meet as a group and venture into urban or natural environments to sketch and draw from real life. We often incorporate drawing human figures in these sessions. This highly valuable side-component will be available upon demand and is specifically intended for ongoing students.

IN-DEPTH COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The Introduction to Drawing course is a progressive series of small-group, beginner-level classes, designed to help you build a strong foundation of drawing skills. These classes are ideal for absolute beginners who have always wanted to draw. In addition, these courses are a great supplement to existing artists who need a refresher, or those who have never attended a traditional drawing foundations course.

I have taken what would equate to years of art-school classes and selected what I think are the most relevant and useful introductory elements. The course is intended to provide you with basic drawing application tools that can be used to constantly improve your artistic skills. If you're considering a professional career in the visual arts, this course is a great preparatory supplement to the challenges ahead.

The course provides a thorough and highly personalized level of instruction as we build on what you learn each week. Every class is loaded with information that is quickly put into practice. I then work with each individual to make sure all of the concepts, skills and and techniques that we cover are thoroughly understood. If you're struggling with a concept or technique, you may always contact me with pertinent questions. I have the utmost respect for people's time and consider these classes to be an educational investment. I make it a point to ensure everyone is getting their time and money's worth.

*The classes will meet once a week at an average of three hours per session.

**About halfway through each class, we will have a 10-15 minute break.

Note: Students attending the Introduction to Drawing Course will receive a discount for 'Scheduled Drawing Workshops'
