Learning how to draw while getting outdoors is a fun and challenging combination of activities for developing both your mental and physical health. These workshops are designed for anyone who is interested in getting outside, learning how to draw, or for those who would like to enhance their existing drawing skills. Register today to secure your spot!

Workshop Fee Options:

Option 1: $30.00 (If you are purchasing your own supplies)

• Upon registration confirmation, you will receive a recommended supply list with items that we will discuss and use in the workshop.

Option 2: $40 (Workshop fee + supply kit rental)

• Supplies include: Temporary use of a clipboard with paper, (3) artist grade pencils, kneaded eraser, pencil sharpener, and graph ruler. Of course you get to keep your, soon to be priceless, sheets of drawing paper.

Option 3: $50 (Workshop fee + Hardbound Sketchbook & Supply Kit [You keep all])

• Supply kit includes: Hardbound sketchbook, (3) artist grade pencils, kneaded eraser, pencil sharpener, and graph ruler.

Drawing Skill Level: Beginner

Hike Length: 4 miles

Trail Type: Out and back

Terrain Type: Fire road in beginning, then mostly single track 

Elevation: +700 ft.

Meeting Time: 12:30 pm 

Workshop Completion Time: 4:30 pm (This workshops usually run about 4 hours, give or take  a few minutes, based on the hiking pace of the group between drawing sessions)

Meeting Location: Meet at the Trail Canyon Falls, Trail Parking gate, just off of Big Tujunga Canyon Road. There is some available parking in the dirt lot at this location, however there is also parking available along Big Tujunga Canyon Rd. nearby the dirt lot. Please use caution when crossing this road.

Trail Head Address (A few hundred yards up trail from our meeting location in the parking lot): 19600 North Trail Canyon Road, Angeles National Forest, Tujunga, CA 91042 (at the turnoff for Forest Rte. 3N29/Gold Canyon Truck Trail).

IMPORTANT NOTE: The workshop end time (4:30 pm) will be at our third and final drawing location near the Trail Canyon Falls. Once the workshop has ended, it takes an average hiker about one hour to descend back up to the original meeting location. Despite the workshop ending, I am happy to hike back with everyone and answer any questions along the way. 

BRIEF WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:

This workshop will include periodic stops for group teaching sessions, followed by individual drawing time with personalized feedback and instruction. You will be introduced to beginner level drawing techniques and concepts that you will put into practice during the workshop. *Attendants with more advanced drawing experience  (or who have attended my 8-week drawing course), will receive instruction specifically tailored to their drawing level. 

Areas of Focus:

• Learning how to find a landscape scene that will translate well on to paper 
• How to simplify complex imagery (i.e. rocks, trees, shrubs, mountains etc.) 
• How to use composition, perspective, and convey depth 
• Adding shade and shadow with a variety of techniques (rendering)
• Incorporating selective imagery (how to exercise your artistic license)
• Using techniques that will add a realistic touch to your landscape drawings
• Setting achievable goals and drawing with realistic expectations
• Developing your own style
• And much more!

This is absolutely one of my favorite intro to drawing workshops to teach as we truly get out into a deep valley and mountainous landscape. The length of the workshop is a bit longer and the hike itself is a bit more involved but the payoff is definitely worth it!
